With the recent development of the 4th industrial era and IT technology, interest in providing metaverse services that combine virtual reality and augmented reality-based technologies is increasing according to the importance of digital transformation. The goal of this study is to improve the efficiency of design classes in the architecture and interior design fields by utilizing the technology of a virtual reality-based Multi-Faceted Cave System in the interior coordination class of G University in the first semester of 2023. As a detailed class goal and hypothesis, it aims to improve the user's understanding of the space and to feel synesthesia on a 1:1 scale. It also aims to improve the design process by checking the spatial design results in three dimensions in real time, shortening the work elements required repeatedly, and increasing the efficiency of the communication process. The method of the study is as follows.
First, we explain the outline and application method of the virtual reality-based Multi-Faceted Cave System used for this study. Second, it explains the outline of the interior coordination class, the number of participants, and the progress. Third, I would like to discuss implications by synthesizing the results of interior coordination classes and Virtual Reality-based Multi-Faceted Cave System and the results of class satisfaction of students participating in the class. This study covers the progress of G University's interior coordination class and the final design results. The period from March 2 to June 15, 2023, to Thursday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., and 15 weeks is the time range. G University's interior material engineering department, lecture room, VR content design laboratory, metaverse online exhibition space, portal and application that are spatialized and linked with Sketch Up programs are spatial scope. A Multi-Faceted Cave System based on Virtual Reality was used for 17 students participating in the class for this study. Twelve participants participated in the 5-point Likert scale questionnaire for quantitative evaluation of participating students, nine for qualitative evaluation of descriptive answers, and eight for qualitative evaluation in the form of 1:1 or small group discussions. This study achieved the goal of the study set through this verification process. As a result, first, using a Multi-Faceted Cave System based on Virtual Reality, it was possible to check the design results in three dimensions by giving feedback on a 1:1 scale and in real time. Second, it improved the efficiency of the communication process and design process by sharing it online and offline using various convergent media. This is a discussion on the direction of education, practice, and research in the fields of architecture and interior design based on the use of science and technology, Interdisciplinary, and Convergence according to the 4th industrial era in the future. It is also the first attempt to use new technology in class, and it is meaningful to confirm the new challenges and directions for the future of the participating students.
